Doing God's Work
Everyday in the United States, families and single
adults who have
never been homeless lose their housing and enter a shelter or find
themselves on the streets. Homelessness is a growing problem
in the United States and in our own community. Thirty nine
percent (39%) of the US homeless population are children and forty
percent (40%) are Veterans.
In
2006, Randy Sams' Outreach Shelter provided 16,326 bed nights and
served 48,978 meals. At Christmas, baskets including turkeys
with all the trimmings for Christmas Day were distributed to 900
families.
We need every faith community and
social service organization's help in the Texarkana area in order to
keep the doors open at the shelter. The costs are great and the need is
ever present.
Randy Sams - What We Do
Our Residents
The
primary mission of RSOS is to provide meals and a safe place to sleep
for homeless people. However, our services to our residents also
include:
- Medical referrals and transportation

- Addiction Treatment
- Life Skill Training
- Employment Referrals
- Other services as necessary
As
part of our commitment to supporting a successful return to the
community, Randy Sams' employs residents in different areas in
different areas with the goals of training, work ethic, and skill
development in mind.
The Texarkana Area
Community
Apart
from our residential services, Randy Sams' is also active in Texarkana
to prevent hunger and homelessness. Among the the services provided are:
- Groceries and food baskets (per household every
60 days)
- Diapers, wipes, formula, and other baby needs
(as supplies allow)
- Christmas food
And as Funds allow:

Annual Cigars Tini's & Tunes '07
Mr. Bill Caller - CT&T Event Coordinator
2007
Cigars Tini's & Tunes is a very important fundraising event for the
shelter each year. Randy Sams can keep it's doors open only
through the kind and generous support it gets from our community.
The 2007 CT&T event provided us $30,000 ... so we can provide food
& shelter and couseling to our residents and the poor in
Texarkana.
To all
who helped this year...Thank you and God bless you for helping us.
We look forward
to a bigger and better event next year.

Randy Sams Outreach Shelter is a United Way
Greater Texarkana Participating Agency
The United Way currently
supports three of our programs:
- Housing Assistance
- Prescription Assistance
- Client Advisory

RSOS - Main
Sleeping Area
Our History
The
effort to
establish this Shelter began in 1993 with the death of Randy
"Tuffy" Sams. Randy was a local teenager who was active in the Outreach
Kitchen
at St.
James' Church. In honor of
their son, Randy's parents donated land and seed money to
establish a shelter
that would serve the Greater Texarkana Area's homeless, hungry and
poor. The
RSOS opened on January
6, 1996, and currently
averages
between 50-55 guests per night. The 10,200 square foot structure can
accommodate 100 persons. To date, RSOS has
transitioned over 400 clients
into permanent housing, and over 4,200 community clients have received
utility
assistance, prescription assistance, rental assistance, and food
baskets. The
RSOS was established as a 501 (c)(3) Non-profit Organization on March 8, 1995 and became a United
Way Greater
Texarkana participating agency in 2002.
Randy
Sams' Outreach Shelter is the only homeless Shelter in an 85 mile
radius of Texarkana. We are open 24 hours/day, 7 days a week.
New
people show
up daily, coming from as far away as New York and as close as down the
street. They each have a different story, but they all have
one
thing in common... they need a place to stay.
By the Grace of
God, they have one.
"Spread
love everywhere you go: first of all in your own house. Give
love to your children, to your wife or husband, to a next door
neighbor... Let no one ever come to you without leaving better and
happier. Be the living expression of God's kindness; kindness in your
face, kindness in your eyes, kindness in your smile, kindness in your
warm greeting."
- Mother Teresa
