MUSIC AT ST. JAMES' CHURCH
“…and sing Psalms and Hymns
and Spiritual Songs with thankfulness in your hearts to God.” So
Saint
Paul has written in
his Epistle to the Colossian Church. And we do likewise at each Liturgy here at Saint
James’. Congregational singing of the Hymns, Psalms and Canticles is an
essential part of Anglican worship, and the people of this parish do it well.
Along with the music of the people, however, we can also offer other music of
great intellectual, spiritual and artistic worth. This is where our Choirs and
our Bell Ensemble are involved:
THE BOY CHOIR: This is our
newest, yet oldest, choral group, in that it is a restoration of the type of
Choir that historically has sung here since early times (stop in and see the
1912 photo in the choir room, showing an ensemble of teenage boys and men, “The
Morning Choir”). Our Boy Choir is being trained in the great traditions of the
English Cathedral choirs, and has made remarkable progress since their first
rehearsal in February. Among their offerings for the Fall season will be: Solemn
Choral Evensong with the adult Gentlemen of the Choir for the Feast of Saint
Michael and All Angels on September 30th; Latin Mass for the
Solemnity of All Saints on November 4th; and singing the Boy Choir
portion of Orff’s “Carmina Burana” with the Symphony Chorale in December.

THE PARISH CHOIR: This
important choral group assists on a nearly weekly basis in the proclamation of
the Gospel in song, helping to lead the congregation, and singing the Psalm of
the day. The choir this past season consisted largely of singers new to the
group, and truly excellent progress has been made in the areas of blend,
diction, and overall confidence. We look forward to welcoming them back this
Fall, and we also invite you to join us for great music, fellowship, and
fun.
THE HANDBELL ENSEMBLE: This
group of dedicated musicians will be restored to a regular schedule of
rehearsals and musical offerings, beginning in September. The parish owns an
outstanding set of English handbells, and we need to use and hear them on a
regular basis. If you are interested in making a non-singing contribution to the
music at Saint James’, please join us. The ability to read music is helpful in
this ensemble.
